System Cards: Switch the Handball Defense in Three Seconds
Teams of six defend their handball area with defensive slides, and when the teacher holds up a card (6-0, 5-1 or 3-2-1) they must reset into that system within three seconds. It warms up with lateral movement and trains communication when switching defenses.

How to play
- Defensive slides along the 6-meter line: lateral shuffles, diagonal step-outs and back, in groups of six (2 min).
- Quick review: the teacher shows each card and teams walk into each system; anyone unsure asks the player next to them (2 min).
- Cards at a jog: the offense passes around the outside of the area; when a card goes up, the defense resets in three seconds and keeps shifting (3 min).
- Cards at game speed: switch defenses against a half-speed 6v6 attack ending with a shot; teams swap roles each round (3 min).
Rules
- The defense doesn't need to steal: just get in position and shift toward the ball.
- Slide without crossing your feet.
- If two defenders go to the same spot, they stop and one sorts it out by calling their name.
- Final shots go on an empty goal, or a helmeted goalkeeper if your school has the gear.
Variations
Easier
Only two cards: 6-0 and 5-1.
Standard
Three cards: 6-0, 5-1 and 3-2-1.
Harder
Add a blank card meaning "captain's call": the team must decide and shout the system.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the cards are already a visual cue; add a different color per system.
- Injured students: hold up the cards and time the three seconds.
- Less confident students: always take the same spot (for example, center) so they have an anchor.
Learning goals
- Warm up with handball-specific defensive movement.
- Recognize and set up different defensive systems quickly.
- Communicate positions while switching.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 12
- cones: 12
- handballs: 4
Teacher tip
Cards can be folded paper with the system written big. The typical mistake is everyone staring at the teacher instead of the ball: make them keep shifting while they switch.
