Swiss-System 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament
A student-run 3-on-3 tournament using the Swiss system: each round pairs teams with similar records and nobody is knocked out. Students practice running a competition, peer officiating and 3-on-3 play.
How to play
- Make 8 teams of 3; the extra student is tournament director. Draw standings on the whiteboard with wins and point differential (3 min).
- Round 1: random matchups on four baskets, games of 5 minutes or to 11.
- After each round, the director records scores and sorts the table by wins, then point differential (1 min).
- Rounds 2 to 4: teams with the same number of wins play each other, with no repeat opponents.
- Games are self-officiated and both captains confirm the score to the director (4 rounds, 24 min).
- Wrap-up: read the final standings and discuss which teams improved (2 min).
Rules
- No repeat opponents; if unavoidable, the director decides.
- A score only counts once both captains confirm it.
- Check the ball behind the three-point line after a make.
- Walk around the outside of the courts when changing baskets.
Variations
Easier
Three rounds with matchups prepared by the teacher.
Standard
Four Swiss-system rounds run by a student director.
Harder
Tiebreakers include sportsmanship points awarded by opponents after each game.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: serve as director or play with defenders an arm's length away.
- Autism: get a printed round schedule and know their basket in advance.
- Lower fitness: teams of 4 with a sub after every basket.
Learning goals
- Run a tournament where every team plays the same amount.
- Apply standings and tiebreaker criteria.
- Compete with respect for opponents and results.

Teacher tip
Bring the standings table already drawn so the director does not lose time. Point out at the end that games got closer each round: that is the Swiss system's strength.
