Study Desk Ergonomics Audit
In pairs, students measure and adjust their study setup with a checklist: chair and desk height, screen distance, and knee and elbow angles. Then they design three movement breaks to correct the postures they found.
How to play
- Intro (3 min): reference posture with feet flat, knees and elbows at about 90 degrees, back supported, and screen at eye level.
- Measuring (8 min): one partner sits as they study at home for 1 minute while the other uses a tape measure to record five checklist points: seat height, desk, elbow, eyes, and distance to the screen or book.
- Adjusting (5 min): the pair finds fixes with what's in the room, like a book as a footrest or a backpack as back support, then measures again; switch roles.
- Movement breaks (6 min): each pair designs three 30-second exercises to do every 45 minutes of study: one for the neck, one for the back, and one for the legs.
- Share-out (3 min): each pair teaches one break and the whole class does it together.
Rules
- Safety: nobody stands on chairs or desks to make adjustments.
- Measure without touching your partner unless they say it's okay.
- Movement breaks must be doable without leaving your seat area.
- Put desks and chairs back the way you found them.
Variations
Easier
Use a checklist with three checkpoints and drawings of the correct posture.
Standard
Five-measurement checklist, setup adjustments, and three designed movement breaks.
Harder
Compare the study setup with phone use on the couch and propose a weekly plan of changes.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: audit their own setup in their chair and adjust the desk height.
- Students with autism: numbered steps with picture symbols and a trusted partner.
- Visual impairment: large-print checklist and a tape measure with raised marks.
Learning goals
- Evaluate the ergonomics of a study setup using measurable criteria.
- Propose simple adjustments to improve posture.
- Design movement breaks to interrupt sitting time.
Equipment for a class of 25
- chairs: 25
- desks: 13
- tape measures: 13
- checklists: 25
Teacher tip
Ask students to bring a photo of their desk at home to compare. Stress that the best posture is the next one: changing position often beats sitting perfectly.
