Student-Officiated Pickleball Mini-Tournament
A pickleball doubles mini-tournament in which students run each game as kitchen referee and scorekeeper. Students work on the rules, the three-number score call, handling disagreements, and respecting officials' decisions.
How to play
- Groups of 6 per court: two pairs play, one student is the kitchen referee (non-volley zone faults), and one is the scorekeeper. Each gets a role card (3 min).
- The scorekeeper calls the score before every serve using three numbers: serving team's score, receiving team's score, and server number (1 or 2).
- Games to 7 points or 6 minutes with school rules: diagonal underhand serve, two-bounce rule, and kitchen.
- After each game, roles rotate: the winning pair officiates, and the officials play the losing pair (4 rounds, 24 min).
- The whiteboard tracks wins for each pair. Wrap-up: each referee shares one tough call and how they handled it (3 min).
Rules
- The referee's call is final; questions are discussed after the game.
- Only one player per pair speaks to the referee, respectfully.
- Officials stand off the court, next to the net post.
- No pair plays two games in a row without an officiating break.
Variations
Easier
Drop the kitchen rule and have the scorekeeper call only two numbers.
Standard
Doubles with the kitchen, the two-bounce rule, and three-number scoring.
Harder
Add a line judge, and give each pair one challenge per game for the teacher to decide.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student can officiate or play with one extra bounce allowed.
- Hearing impairment: the scorekeeper shows the score with fingers or on a mini whiteboard.
- Shyness: start with the scorekeeper role, which has a clear, structured task.
Learning goals
- Apply doubles pickleball rules, including as an official.
- Keep and call the three-number score.
- Accept officials' decisions and handle disagreements respectfully.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Before the tournament, rehearse the three-number score on one court with the whole class watching; it is the most confusing part. Circulate to support referees, not to replace them.
