Student-Led Dance Fitness Class
Groups of 5 prepare a 5-minute dance fitness block with simple, repetitive moves and lead it for the whole class as if they were instructors at a community fitness class. Students work on cardio endurance, organizing activities and communicating with a group.
How to play
- In the previous class or at the start (5 minutes), each group of 5 gets a worksheet with the structure: 4 base moves, a 3- to 4-minute song and cues for announcing each change.
- Each group rehearses its block for 5 minutes, deciding who leads each part and how to cue the next move (gesture, countdown from 4).
- Groups take turns leading their block for the class, standing in front and mirroring; 5 groups of about 4 minutes each with 30-second transitions.
- While one group leads, everyone else follows and checks intensity with the talk test (they can talk, but choppily).
- Finish with a 2-minute cool-down led by the last group and a quick peer review on the worksheet covering clarity, energy and inclusion. 4 minutes.
Rules
- Every move must have a low-impact option (no jumping) that is always shown.
- Anyone can lower the intensity without explaining why.
- Water breaks are allowed between blocks.
Variations
Easier
3-minute blocks with only 3 repeating base moves.
Standard
4-minute blocks with 4 base moves, countdown cues and a low-impact option.
Harder
Blocks that combine the moves into a final 32-count sequence and build intensity.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility can lead arm and torso moves that the whole class does together, or follow the class seated.
- For students who are deaf or hard of hearing, changes are cued with a visual finger countdown and a fixed gesture for each move.
- Students with lower fitness always do the low-impact version and lead the cool-down part.
Learning goals
- Plan and lead a physical activity for a group.
- Sustain moderate-to-vigorous aerobic effort throughout class.
- Adjust move intensity for different fitness levels.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music: 1
- speakers: 1
- worksheets: 5
Teacher tip
Screen the songs ahead of time for inappropriate lyrics. A common mistake is leading without looking at the class; leaders should face the group and use big gestures.
