Student-Led Cool-Down Stretch
Groups of five get a card naming a body area and must plan and lead the rest of the class through two suitable stretches for that area. It builds independence in cooling down and knowledge of safe stretching.
How to play
- Make five groups of five and give each a card: back of legs, front of legs, hips and glutes, back, shoulders and neck (1 min).
- Each group has 3 minutes to choose two stretches for its area, practice them, and decide who explains and who demonstrates (3 min).
- Groups take turns at the front, leading their two stretches, naming the muscle and holding each one for 20 seconds (5 min).
- After each group, the teacher adds a correction or safety tip if needed.
- The class gives quick thumbs feedback: clear, could be better, or confusing.
- Wrap-up: everyone silently repeats the stretch they found most useful (1 min).
Rules
- Only static stretches; no bouncing and no positions that strain knees or neck.
- The leader must explain the position and name the muscle.
- Everyone else follows instructions quietly and respectfully.
- The whole group takes part; every member has a role.
Variations
Easier
Cards show pictures of two possible stretches to choose from.
Standard
Each group freely chooses two stretches for its area.
Harder
Each group adds a breathing cue and explains why the stretch helps after today's activity.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student's group includes a chair or wheelchair version of each stretch.
- Shy students: they can demonstrate while a teammate explains.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the leading group faces the class and exaggerates the visual demonstration.
Learning goals
- Choose appropriate stretches for each body area.
- Lead a group with clear, safe instructions.
- Take ownership of the cool-down.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 5
- yoga mats: 25
Teacher tip
Check the stretches during planning time to catch unsafe positions before they're taught. Keep the cards to rotate body areas in future lessons.
