Stroop Stretch Color Challenge
A focus game based on the Stroop effect: the teacher holds up cards with a color word printed in a different ink color, and students do the stretch for the ink color, not the word. It trains attention and impulse control.
How to play
- Students spread out standing. Each color has a stretch: red, quad stretch; blue, arms overhead; green, calf stretch; yellow, side neck stretch.
- Practice (1 minute): word and ink match; everyone holds the stretch for 10 seconds.
- Stroop round (2 minutes): they don't match, for example "GREEN" printed in red. Students do the ink-color stretch and hold it 15 seconds, breathing slowly.
- Reverse round (1.5 minutes): now students follow the word. Anyone who slips just switches and keeps going.
- Final round (1.5 minutes): two volunteers flash the cards faster and faster. Finish with 3 deep breaths.
Rules
- No one is eliminated: if you slip, switch to the correct stretch.
- Hold each stretch still until the next card.
- Play in silence.
- For the quad stretch, you may touch the wall or a partner's shoulder for balance.
Variations
Easier
Use only two colors and show the cards slowly.
Standard
Use four colors with a new card every 15 seconds.
Harder
Add a fifth color; the teacher switches between ink and word without warning by raising one or two hands.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: each color has a seated stretch, such as a knee extension for red.
- Color blindness or low vision: add a large symbol for each ink color and respond to the symbol.
- Autism: hand out the color and stretch chart beforehand to check during play.
Learning goals
- Stay focused and hold back automatic responses to conflicting cues.
- Perform basic stretches with control while thinking.
- Lower the heart rate with a calm mental challenge.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cardstock cards: 12
Teacher tip
Make about 12 cards with a thick marker and write the answer on the back. Explain the Stroop effect at the end; students are amazed at how hard it is for the brain.
