String-and-Cup Tower: Build Without Touching
Groups of five control a rubber band tied to five short strings to pick up plastic cups and build a pyramid without touching the cups with their hands. The task demands calm, precision and agreement, and the second round is done in complete silence.
How to play
- Each group gets a rubber band with five 3-foot strings tied to it and six upside-down cups; each student holds the end of one string (1 min).
- Free practice: pull together to open the band and ease off to close it, then pick up a cup and move it (2 min).
- Round 1 with talking: build a six-cup pyramid (3-2-1) as fast as possible; it is timed (3 min).
- Round 2 in silence: the group rebuilds the pyramid without talking, using only gestures agreed on beforehand, and compares times (3 min).
- Quick reflection: what changed without words and who took the lead (1 min).
Rules
- Cups may only be touched with the band; if someone touches one by hand, it goes back to the start.
- Hold strings in your hand, never wrapped around fingers or wrists.
- If the tower falls, rebuild it without blaming anyone.
Variations
Easier
A three-cup pyramid and shorter strings.
Standard
A six-cup pyramid, one round talking and one in silence.
Harder
A ten-cup pyramid (4-3-2-1) in silence, with one blindfolded group member guided by touch cues.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: joins from the wheelchair with the table or bench at a suitable height, holding a string like everyone else.
- Visual impairment: holds a string and receives pull or release cues through taps on the shoulder.
- Autism: gets a fixed string and a clear job (for example, signaling when the cup is in place) and is shown the agreed gesture.
Learning goals
- Lower arousal with a precision and focus task.
- Coordinate group actions with and without verbal communication.
- Manage frustration when the build fails.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Make the band-and-string kits before class and reuse them all year. It works as a closer for a cooperative games unit or as a link to a leadership lesson.
