Stretching Checklist: Correct Your Partner
While one partner does four cool-down stretches, the other assesses them with a five-point safety and technique checklist. Then they switch, so every student gets specific feedback on how they stretch.
How to play
- Introduce the checklist: correct alignment, no bouncing, steady breathing, 20-30 second hold, and a stretch feeling between 3 and 5 out of 10, reported by the performer (2 min).
- The performer does four stretches chosen from a list (quads, hamstrings, chest, calf) and the observer marks yes or no for each item (3 min).
- The observer gives feedback with one thing done well and one to improve, and the performer repeats the weakest stretch (1 min).
- Switch roles (3 min).
- Class discussion of the most common mistakes spotted (1 min).
Rules
- Observers correct verbally; they only touch the partner with permission and to point, never to push.
- The person stretching decides how strong the stretch feels, not the observer.
- Checklists are for improvement, not grades; they go to the student who was assessed.
- Keep 3 feet of space between mats.
Variations
Easier
The checklist has three items: alignment, no bouncing and hold time.
Standard
Five items applied to four stretches.
Harder
The observer also suggests an alternative for any stretch the partner can't do well.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: the observer describes the posture, the performer explains how it feels, and the checklist is read aloud.
- Limited mobility: choose stretches that can be done in a chair; the checklist stays the same.
- Reading difficulties: the card includes a drawing for each item.
Learning goals
- Learn the criteria for a safe and effective stretch.
- Observe and assess a classmate's performance with objective criteria.
- Improve their own technique based on the feedback received.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 30
- mats: 30
Teacher tip
Walk around and check a few cards to make sure observers are rigorous. Keep the cards as peer-assessment evidence for the health standard.
