Stretching Card Deck
In groups of five, students draw playing cards: the suit picks the body area to stretch and the number sets how long to hold it. It makes static stretching varied and a bit unpredictable.
How to play
- Make groups of five around their mats and give each group half a deck, face down (1 min).
- Explain the code and post it on the whiteboard: diamonds = legs, hearts = hips and back, spades = shoulders and arms, clubs = neck and trunk.
- Taking turns, one student draws a card, picks a stretch for that area and leads it; the group holds it for the card number times three seconds (5 min).
- Face cards (jack, queen, king) mean "free partner stretch" for 20 seconds.
- If the group draws the same suit twice in a row, it must choose a different stretch for that area.
- At the end, the group gathers the cards and each student says which area felt tightest (2 min).
Rules
- Hold stretches with no bouncing and no pain.
- Repeat one-sided stretches on both sides.
- Whoever draws the card leads; the rest follow quietly.
- Handle cards with care and return the full set.
Variations
Easier
Use a sheet with pictured stretches for each suit.
Standard
Each leader chooses a stretch for the area shown by the suit.
Harder
The leader also names the main muscle and one injury the stretch helps prevent.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: each suit has a chair or wheelchair alternative.
- Students with visual impairments: a partner describes the card and gives verbal cues for the position.
- Students with limited flexibility: reduce the range and use a towel or rope for help.
Learning goals
- Perform static stretches for different body areas safely.
- Match each body area with suitable stretches.
- Lead part of the cool-down independently.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
One standard deck covers two groups. Walk around and correct back position, especially in seated forward bends.
