Stretch Without Getting Up: A Study-Afternoon Routine
A stretching and mobility routine done in a chair, designed for use at home during afternoons of studying. Students learn it, practice it and set a reminder to do it every 45 minutes.
How to play
- Starting position: feet flat, back off the backrest and shoulders relaxed; three slow breaths (1 min).
- Neck and shoulders: side neck tilts, backward shoulder rolls and a chest opener with hands clasped behind the back (2 min).
- Back: trunk rotation holding the backrest on each side and a gentle forward fold letting the arms hang (2 min).
- Hips and legs: seated figure-four stretch (ankle on the opposite knee) and knee extension with toes pointing up (3 min).
- Each student picks the three stretches that helped most and sets a silent phone alarm every 45 minutes for their study afternoon (2 min).
Rules
- Stretch without bouncing and never into pain.
- The chair must be stable, without wheels, with all four legs on the floor.
- Hold each position for about 20 seconds, breathing calmly.
Variations
Easier
Only neck, shoulders and trunk rotation.
Standard
Full four-area routine with a scheduled reminder.
Harder
Each student adds a standing activation exercise to pair with the seated routine.
Adaptations
- Hip injury: replaces the figure-four with legs crossed at the ankles.
- Limited mobility: does the routine in their own wheelchair, adapting the range of motion.
- Autism: has the sequence on a picture card to take home.
Learning goals
- Learn a stretching routine to use while studying.
- Reduce the stiffness that comes from sitting for long periods.
- Create a personal reminder to break up sitting time.
Equipment for a class of 25
- chairs: 30
Teacher tip
Project or hand out the routine so students can take it home. It works as a cool-down after any classroom lesson or before exam season.
