Stretch Sequence Puzzle: Toes to Head
Each group gets eight shuffled stretch cards and must put them in a logical order, from toes to head and without sudden position changes, then perform them together. Students learn to organize a cool-down on purpose rather than at random.
How to play
- Students form groups of four and each group gets an envelope with eight cards: calves, quads, hamstrings, inner thighs, glutes, back, chest, and neck (1 min).
- The teacher gives two guidelines: go from toes to head, and group standing, seated, and lying positions so students aren't constantly getting up and down (1 min).
- Each group lays the cards out in order on the floor within two minutes; they must agree and be able to explain why each card goes where it does (2 min).
- Two groups join up, compare sequences, and each suggests and explains one change to the other's order (1.5 min).
- Each group performs its sequence: one student quietly counts 20 seconds per stretch and the counting role rotates on every card (4 min).
- Groups put the cards back in the envelope in their final order so the sequence can be used next class (0.5 min).
Rules
- The whole group must agree on the order before starting.
- Hold each stretch for 20 seconds without bouncing.
- Safety: anyone unsure how to do a stretch asks before trying it.
Variations
Easier
Order only five cards, with the first one already placed by the teacher.
Standard
Eight cards ordered toes to head, grouping positions.
Harder
Add two trick cards that aren't stretches; groups must discard them and explain why.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the group includes a seated version of each stretch so their classmate can do every one.
- Hearing impairment: cards show a picture and a key word, and counting is done on fingers.
- Fitness level: groups that finish early add the muscle being stretched to each card.
Learning goals
- Organize a stretching sequence using logical criteria.
- Explain decisions and reach agreement as a group.
- Perform the designed sequence independently.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 48
Teacher tip
Laminate the cards and store them in numbered envelopes for reuse. Groups often argue about starting standing or lying down: use it to explain that consistency is what matters.
