Stretch Memory Chain
In groups of five, each student adds a stretch to a sequence that the group must remember and repeat from the beginning. It builds memory, targets the muscles used in class, and encourages teamwork.
How to play
- Make groups of five seated in a circle with room to stretch out their legs (1 min).
- The first student picks a stretch, names the muscle it targets, and the group holds it for 15 seconds.
- The second student repeats the first stretch with the group and adds a new one; each is held about 10-15 seconds (2 min).
- Keep going until the fifth student leads the full five-stretch sequence (3 min).
- If a group forgets a stretch, it may ask another group for a hint in exchange for teaching them one of theirs.
- To finish, each group teaches its full sequence to another group, which follows along in silence (2 min).
Rules
- No repeating a stretch already in the chain.
- Focus on the muscles used during the lesson.
- Hold each stretch with no bouncing and no pain.
- If someone forgets their part, the group helps without teasing.
Variations
Easier
Groups of three and a three-stretch chain, using picture cards as reminders.
Standard
Groups of five, a five-stretch chain naming each muscle.
Harder
Repeat the chain backward, or join two groups into a ten-stretch sequence.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student suggests and performs upper-body and neck stretches from a wheelchair.
- Students with autism: they may write down or sketch the sequence.
- Students with memory difficulties: they name their stretch and the group reminds them of the order.
Learning goals
- Perform static stretches correctly and name the muscle involved.
- Remember and lead a short movement sequence.
- Work with a group to complete a shared task.
Teacher tip
Circulate to fix positions and ask students to name each muscle. If groups keep using the same stretches, assign one body area per person: legs, hips, back, shoulders and neck.
