Stretch Dominoes: Each Ending Starts the Next
Groups build a flowing chain of stretches where the end position of each one is the start of the next, like dominoes. They then memorize it and perform it without stopping, combining flexibility, creativity and motor memory.
How to play
- Groups of four. Each student suggests a stretch for a muscle group worked today (1 min).
- The group orders the four stretches and designs transitions so each ending becomes the next start without jumping up abruptly (3 min).
- Rehearse the chain holding each stretch 20 seconds and each transition 5 seconds (2 min).
- Each group teaches its domino chain to another group, which performs it from memory after seeing it once (3 min).
- Wrap-up: discuss which transition felt most natural and why (1 min).
Rules
- No stretch should hurt: maximum intensity 4 out of 10.
- No bouncing and no forced end-range positions.
- Transitions are slow, with hands down when changing levels.
- Each student uses their own mat and keeps 3 feet of space from others.
Variations
Easier
The chain has three stretches, all on the same level (standing or on the floor).
Standard
Four linked stretches with smooth transitions.
Harder
Two groups join their chains into an eight-piece domino.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the group designs a chain that can be done seated in a chair.
- Overweight or low flexibility: the student may use a wall or bench for support in transitions.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: the group shows the chain through demonstration and picture cards.
Learning goals
- Design a safe stretching sequence that fits the lesson.
- Memorize and reproduce a chain of movements.
- Appreciate movement flow as an expressive resource.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 30
Teacher tip
Require at least one stretch for the muscle group that worked hardest in the main part. Photograph the chains to build a cool-down bank.
