Stretch and Roll: Held Stretches with One Last Roll
A cool-down with six held stretches where, at the end of each, students roll a ball to a cone without breaking the position. The small aiming challenge keeps attention up and makes them hold the stretch with control.

How to play
- Briefing and pairs: each pair has a cone 3 m away and two balls (1 min).
- Lower body: low lunge for the hip flexor, seated hamstring stretch with one leg straight, and seated glute stretch with the ankle on the opposite knee. Hold each for 30 seconds, and in the last 10 seconds roll the ball to the cone with the free hand without losing the position (4 min).
- Upper body: chest stretch with the forearm against a wall or your partner, overhead triceps stretch and forearm flexor stretch with the palm facing out. Same system, rolling with the other hand (4 min).
- Wrap-up: each pair names the stretch where it was hardest to hold the position while rolling, and why (1 min).
Rules
- A stretch never hurts: mild, steady tension.
- If you have to break the position to roll, move closer instead of forcing it.
- Roll the ball gently; don't throw it through the air.
Variations
Easier
Cone at 2 m, and you may roll after releasing the stretch.
Standard
Cone at 3 m and roll without leaving the stretch.
Harder
Cone at 4 m and roll with the non-dominant hand on every stretch.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: upper-body and trunk stretches in the chair; roll the ball down a ramp or drop it into a nearby hoop.
- Knee injury: replace the low lunge with a standing hip-flexor stretch against a wall.
- Hypermobility: stress mild tension and shorten holds to 20 seconds.
Learning goals
- Restore range of motion after a throwing session.
- Hold posture control while doing a precision task.
- Identify which areas are least flexible.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tennis balls: 30
- cones: 15
Teacher tip
This cool-down works with groups that drift off during stretching: the cone keeps them focused. Watch the lunge: the typical mistake is arching the lower back to reach the ball.
