Stretch and Guess: The Muscle and the Sport
Pairs rotate through stretch stations, and while holding each stretch they guess which muscle is being stretched and which sports tend to overload it. It combines a cool-down with learning the body areas most often injured.
How to play
- Explanation: six cones, each with a card face down; the visible side shows only a drawing of the stretch (1 min).
- First lap of the stations: hold each stretch about 20 seconds per side and make a mental note of the muscle (3 min).
- Second lap: at each station the pair names a sport where that muscle works hard, then flips the card to check (4 min).
- Share while walking: each pair tells one correct guess and one surprise (2 min).
Rules
- Stretch to tension, never to pain.
- No bouncing: hold the position still.
- Wait your turn at each station.
- Flip the card only after you answer.
Variations
Easier
Cards with three muscle options to choose from.
Standard
Cards with the drawing on the front and the answer on the back.
Harder
The pair also suggests a strength exercise that would help protect that muscle.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: the partner describes the position and helps them into it with permission; large-print cards.
- Limited mobility: seated versions of each stretch, especially upper body and neck.
- Recent injury: do only the stretches that don't involve that area and help check answers.
Learning goals
- Identify the main muscle groups being stretched.
- Connect muscles with sports that commonly overload them.
- Bring intensity down in an active, orderly way.
Equipment for a class of 25
- stretch cards: 6
- cones: 6
Teacher tip
Useful examples: hamstrings and sprinting, calves and jumping, adductors and soccer, shoulder and throwing sports. Common mistake: turning it into a race; insist on the hold time.
