Story Stretch: The Tale That Stretches You
A short story told out loud where every moment is a stretch: reaching for a high apple, peeking over a fence, hunting for a key under the bed. It stretches the muscles used in class with a storyline, and then groups write their own.
How to play
- The teacher narrates and everyone does it: “You wake up and reach for the ceiling” (side stretch), “you look for a key under the bed” (hamstrings, standing with knees slightly bent), “you peek over the fence” (calves on tiptoe, then heel back) (3 min).
- Groups of 5 invent a four-sentence story where each sentence is a 20-second stretch. One narrates and the others do it (2 min).
- Repeat the story with a new narrator so everyone leads at least one stretch (2 min).
- Shared ending: everyone does the last sentence of their story at once and finishes in a statue (1 min).
Rules
- Hold each stretch without bouncing.
- Stretch to tension, never to pain.
- The story can't call for risky positions (bridges, forced neck twists).
- Keep the timing even when the story gets funny.
Variations
Easier
Only the teacher's story.
Standard
Teacher's story plus group stories.
Harder
Each story must stretch from the bottom up (legs, hips, back, shoulders, neck) without the story giving it away.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated trunk, arm, and neck stretches; the story uses reaching actions.
- Injury: swap the affected stretch for one that doesn't load that area.
- Hearing impairment: the narrator also does the movement so it can be copied.
Learning goals
- Stretch the muscle groups used in the lesson.
- Connect stretches to everyday actions.
- Create a short movement story as a group.
Teacher tip
Prepare your story around the muscles from the lesson and leave the example on a card for the groups. The usual mistake is stretching too fast to keep up with the story: you set the pace of the narration.
