Storks and Frogs Tag
Tag game where storks chase by hopping on one foot and frogs escape with two-foot jumps; whoever gets tagged takes the scarf and switches roles. Students practice both jump types, dynamic balance and endurance.
How to play
- Mark a 45-by-45-foot pond with cones and scatter 5 hoops as nests. Choose 3 storks, each holding a scarf as a beak.
- Frogs may only move with two-foot jumps; storks may only hop on one foot. Practice each one for a minute.
- On the signal, storks try to touch frogs with the scarf. The tagged frog takes the scarf and becomes a stork; the old stork becomes a frog.
- Storks may rest in a nest for 5 seconds to switch feet. Inside a nest they cannot tag or be bothered.
- Play 2-minute rounds with 30 seconds of rest. Each new round, add one stork, up to a maximum of 5.
Rules
- Tag only by touching with the scarf; never throw it.
- New storks count to three before chasing and cannot tag the player who gave them the scarf.
- No running: a stork who puts both feet down goes back to a nest.
- Jump looking forward to avoid collisions.
Variations
Easier
Frogs may walk and storks switch feet whenever they want.
Standard
Frogs jump with two feet, storks hop, and roles switch with the scarf.
Harder
Frogs may only jump backward or sideways and storks cannot use nests.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: be a stork in a wheelchair tagging with a pool noodle, or the guardian of a nest.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: start and end each round by raising a colored cone.
- Fitness level: tired students may stay in a nest for 10 seconds; very fit students always hop on their weaker foot.
Learning goals
- Travel continuously with two-foot jumps and one-foot hops.
- Keep balance while moving on one foot.
- Accept role changes without complaining.
Equipment for a class of 25
- scarves: 5
- hoops: 5
- cones: 4
Teacher tip
Hopping tires young children quickly: keep rounds short and make sure they switch feet. The scarf shows clearly who is it and prevents arguments.
