Step Duet: A Routine with Two Platforms in Conversation
Each pair sets up two step platforms and builds a routine where the dancers interact: switching platforms, crossing paths or answering each other's moves. It trains aerobic endurance and collaborative creation.
How to play
- Review base step moves: basic, V-step, knee lift and over the top (5 min).
- Pairs set their two steps side by side, in a line or in an L, and test how to switch platforms safely (5 min).
- Compose four eight-counts with at least one platform switch, one canon and one call-and-response (10 min).
- Rehearse at tempo (5 min).
- Show it in groups of three pairs who watch each other (5 min).
Rules
- Always walk to switch platforms; never jump from one step to another.
- Put your whole foot on the step; no heel hanging off.
- Steps go on a dry floor with at least one meter of clear space around them.
- Music at 118–125 BPM max.
Variations
Easier
Two eight-counts, steps side by side, no platform switch.
Standard
Four eight-counts with a switch, a canon and a call-and-response.
Harder
Six eight-counts with two platform layouts and a height change.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the pair uses one step and the other dancer performs their part seated in front of it with arms and feet.
- Students with visual impairments: platform edges marked with bright or textured tape, and the partner calls out every switch.
- Knee discomfort: lowest step height, or do the moves on the floor.
Learning goals
- Compose an interactive routine with a partner.
- Sustain aerobic intensity during rehearsal.
- Stay safe during platform switches.
Equipment for a class of 25
- speaker: 1
- step platforms: 16
Teacher tip
If you don't have enough steps, use low plyo box lids or schoolyard steps and work in threes. Common mistake: stepping down onto the toes; insist on a full-foot landing.
