Statue Straight: Runner's Stretches With a Balance Twist
Students walk down a straight lined with cones, and at each cone they hold a classic runner's stretch on one foot, like a statue, without putting the other foot down. It combines flexibility, balance and a calm but challenging end to class.
How to play
- Explain: six cones along the straight; at each, a 20-second stretch on one foot (1 min).
- First pass: standing quad stretch holding the ankle, and calf stretch with the leg back (3 min).
- Second pass: hamstring stretch with the heel forward, and standing figure-four glute stretch (3 min).
- Final challenge: repeat your favorite stretch with eyes closed, a partner standing by (1 min).
Rules
- Stretch to tension, never pain.
- If you lose balance, put your foot down and keep going: it's not a fail.
- Eyes closed only with a partner right beside you.
- Keep your back straight in every stretch.
Variations
Easier
Stretches with support from a wall or partner.
Standard
Stretches on one foot without support.
Harder
Stretches on one foot on a floor line, or longer with eyes closed.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: do the whole route with a hand on their partner or the wall.
- Wheelchair users: seated torso, shoulder and arm stretches with a trunk-balance challenge, back off the backrest.
- Students with an ankle injury: balance only on the healthy foot, or with support.
Learning goals
- Stretch the main running muscle groups.
- Improve static balance.
- Lower intensity with a calm, engaging task.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 6
Teacher tip
Count the 20 seconds out loud at first, then let them do it on their own. Common mistake: in the quad stretch they pull the knee out to the side; ask for knees together and hips forward.
