Stationary Ball-Handling: Figure-Eight Challenge
Each student, with a ball and staying in place, links ball-handling drills such as around the world, figure eights between the legs and the spider dribble, counting reps to beat their own score. It builds ball control, coordination and personal drive.
How to play
- Each student has a ball, standing in rows about 6 ft apart (1 min).
- Around the world (3 min): circle the ball around the head, waist, knees and ankles in both directions; then 30 seconds counting waist circles.
- Figure eight (3 min): feet wide, weave the ball in a figure eight between the legs; then 30 seconds counting full eights.
- Spider dribble (3 min): quick, low dribbles between the legs, alternating two hands in front and two behind.
- Partners (3 min): one makes up a sequence of three drills and the other copies it; then switch.
- Final challenge (2 min): everyone repeats the 30-second figure eight and tries to beat their first score.
Rules
- Feet stay in place during the drills.
- If the ball gets away, walk to get it without cutting in front of others.
- Safety: eyes up and the ball always under control close to the body.
- Compare your score only with your own.
Variations
Easier
Use a smaller or foam ball and skip the spider dribble.
Standard
Youth basketball with all four drills.
Harder
Do the drills with eyes up, never looking at the ball, and switch direction on the whistle.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student does around the world and figure eights around the trunk while seated.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with a bell and work next to the wall as a reference.
- Skill level: each student chooses the ball size they feel most confident with.
Learning goals
- Improve ball control with both hands.
- Coordinate hands and legs in stationary movements.
- Beat their own score through effort and persistence.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 25
Teacher tip
If you are in a classroom with neighbors, drop the spider dribble and use foam balls so the rest stays quiet. Ask for eyes up from the start, even though it is harder.
