Star excursion balance test
Standing on one leg at the center of a star taped on the floor, students reach as far as possible with the other leg in three directions. They measure dynamic balance, compare both sides and connect differences to ankle and knee injury risk.
How to play
- Each trio tapes three strips on the floor in a Y shape: one forward and two angled back, and marks centimeters with a measuring tape (4 min).
- Measure each student's leg length from hip to ankle so results can be compared (2 min).
- Demonstrate: barefoot or in socks, stand on the center, tap the line as far as possible with the free foot and return without losing balance (2 min).
- Each student does two practice tries and three scored attempts per direction on each leg; one partner measures and one records (10 min).
- Calculate the composite score: sum of the three distances divided by three times leg length, times 100 (3 min).
- If the forward reach differs between legs by more than 4 cm, the student writes two balance exercises into their plan (1 min).
Rules
- An attempt does not count if the free foot takes weight, the stance heel lifts or balance is lost.
- The free foot only taps the line and never bears weight.
- Test without shoes on a non-slip surface.
- Keep clear space around each star.
Variations
Easier
Measure only the forward direction and allow one hand on the wall.
Standard
Three-direction test on both legs with a composite score.
Harder
Repeat the forward reach with eyes closed and compare results.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: measure seated arm reach in three directions as a trunk control test.
- Visual impairment: a partner describes the line and guides orientation with light touch.
- Recent ankle injury: act as the measurer or test with one hand on the wall.
Learning goals
- Assess dynamic balance in a precise, comparable way.
- Spot leg-to-leg differences linked to injury risk.
- Add balance exercises to their personal plan.

Teacher tip
Tape a model star before class and pull up the tape at the end so the floor is not damaged. The most common error is putting weight on the reaching foot.
