Standing Towel Stretch Sequence
A guided sequence of six standing stretches that uses a towel as an extension of the arms. Students stretch shoulders, chest, sides, triceps, quads, and hamstrings without lying down and learn to hold each position without bouncing.
How to play
- Each student grabs a towel and finds a spot with an arm's length of space on each side, standing with feet hip-width apart (1 min).
- Shoulders and chest: hold the towel taut by the ends, raise it overhead, and slowly take it back as far as possible without bending the elbows; 5 slow passes (1 min).
- Side stretch: with the towel taut overhead, lean to one side for three breaths, then to the other; twice per side (1 min).
- Triceps: drop the towel behind the neck with one hand and grab the bottom end with the other; the lower hand pulls gently for 20 seconds, then switch arms (1.5 min).
- Quads: with one hand on the wall, loop the towel around the top of the foot and bring the heel toward the glutes for 20 seconds per leg, knees together (1.5 min).
- Hamstrings: place one heel forward with the leg straight, loop the towel under the ball of the foot, and pull toward you while hinging forward with a flat back, 20 seconds per leg (1.5 min).
Rules
- Hold every stretch still, with no bouncing.
- Aim for moderate tension: a pull, never pain.
- Safety: on single-leg stretches, always hold on to the wall or a partner.
Variations
Easier
Do the sequence seated on a chair or bench with a very wide grip on the towel.
Standard
Six stretches held about 20 seconds per side with the towel taut.
Harder
Narrow the grip on the towel and hold each stretch for 30 seconds with slow breathing.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the arm and trunk stretches seated and the leg stretches from the chair with the towel under the sole of the foot.
- Visual impairment: the teacher describes each position with touch cues and a partner helps place the towel.
- Fitness level: less flexible students use a wide grip and more flexible students shorten it.
Learning goals
- Perform an ordered sequence of standing stretches independently.
- Adjust stretch range to their own level using the towel.
- Hold static stretches without bouncing while breathing calmly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- towels: 25
Teacher tip
Common mistake: arching the lower back and shrugging when lifting the towel; cue a tight core and ribs down.
