Spy Mission: Compass-Point Clues
With no map, pairs get a secret file with clues like 'north side of the big tree' and must pick the right control flag among several placed around the same feature. Students practice compass directions and precise orientation.
How to play
- Before class, post N, S, E and W signs on the playground walls, checked with a compass. Around 8 features (tree, goal, bench, fountain), place 2 or 3 flags on different sides, each with a code.
- Take 3 minutes to introduce the mission and review directions by pointing to the signs. Each pair gets a file with 8 clues and a card.
- Pairs visit the features in any order; at each one, they decide which flag is on the described side and write its code.
- Allow 13 minutes to search. Then the teacher reads the answers: 1 point per correct code.
- Pairs who finish early write a new clue using an in-between direction (northeast, southwest) for another pair.
- Wrap up for 2 minutes: How did you know where north was at each moment?
Rules
- Look at flags up close, but don't touch them.
- The mission is top secret: don't share codes with other pairs.
- Jog or power-walk; no running near trees, fountains or corners.
- Partners stay together.
Variations
Easier
Use only two flags per feature (north or south) and put direction signs near each feature.
Standard
Eight features with 2 or 3 flags on different sides.
Harder
Use in-between directions and take down the signs: students orient using school landmarks.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: choose features in accessible areas and place flags at seated eye level.
- Low vision: give a large-print file and use flags in very different colors.
- Fitness level: give files with spread-out or clustered features depending on endurance.
Learning goals
- Identify compass directions on the playground using fixed landmarks.
- Interpret clues describing a position relative to a feature.
- Choose accurately between similar options.
Equipment for a class of 25
- control flags: 20
- clue cards: 26
- pencils: 13
- direction signs: 4
Teacher tip
Put up the signs with a compass in front of the class so they see where they come from. Kids often mix up west and left; keep asking which way they are facing.
