Sports Kim's Game: Memorize the Unit's Equipment
Fifteen objects related to the current unit are placed on a mat; the group studies them in silence, they are covered up, and each team must recall them and explain what they are used for in the unit. It is a calm closer that reviews content through visual memory.
How to play
- Students sit around a mat where the teacher has placed fifteen unit objects (for track and field, for example: baton, tape measure, stick, mini hurdle, stopwatch, chalk...) (1 min).
- Silent observation for 40 seconds; then the objects are covered with two pinnies (1 min).
- In teams of five, write on a card every object you remember without saying anything out loud (2 min).
- Uncover: each team scores a point per object remembered and another point if they correctly explain how it was used in the unit (2 min).
- Final challenge: the teacher secretly removes an object and the first team to say which one is missing explains it (1 min).
Rules
- No talking or pointing during observation.
- Nobody touches the objects until the teacher says so.
- Sharp or heavy items are left out or shown as a drawing on a card.
Variations
Easier
Ten objects and a full minute of observation.
Standard
Fifteen unit objects, written recall and an explanation of their use.
Harder
Twenty objects and 30 seconds of observation, with a penalty for made-up items.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: explores the objects by touch before they are covered and gets 30 extra seconds.
- Dyslexia: the team may draw the objects instead of writing them.
- Limited mobility: sits in the front row with the mat at a suitable height, on a bench if needed.
Learning goals
- Lower arousal with an attention and memory task.
- Review the equipment and its uses in the unit.
- Work as a team to rebuild information.
Equipment for a class of 25
- gym mats: 2
- cards: 6
- pinnies: 2
Teacher tip
Change the objects for each unit so the game can close lessons all year. If there is time, ask the winning team to prepare the mat for the next unit.
