Sports Careers Circuit: One Real Task per Station
A six-station circuit where each group spends 4 minutes doing a real task from a sports job: referee, coach, strength and conditioning coach, EMT, sports reporter and facilities manager. Students try out sports careers firsthand and find out which one fits them.
How to play
- Introduce the stations and the personal sheet where everyone will rate each job from 1 to 5 (3 min).
- First three stations, 4 minutes each: referee a 2v2 using three signals, give one technique cue to a player, and lead a 1-minute mini warm-up (12 min).
- Last three stations, 4 minutes each: put together a 911 call with the key facts, call 30 seconds of play-by-play, and inspect a court with a safety checklist (12 min).
- Wrap-up: each person names their favorite job and what training they think it takes; the teacher clarifies the routes (vocational programs, college degrees, federation courses) (3 min).
Rules
- Switch stations on the signal, walking.
- At the referee station, no contact and a foam ball.
- Task cards stay at the station for the next group.
- Respect the classmate playing the "client" or "player".
Variations
Easier
Four stations of 6 minutes with more guided tasks.
Standard
Six stations of 4 minutes.
Harder
Each station has a complication (a player who won't listen, a court with a serious hazard, a call with bad reception) to solve.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: every station has a version without moving around (officiate from the line, lead from a chair).
- Visually impaired students: the reporter station is done radio-style and the facilities station by touch-checking equipment.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: task cards with written instructions and pictograms.
Learning goals
- Experience real tasks from six sports jobs.
- Reflect on personal interests regarding career paths.
- Learn about training routes in the sector.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 18
- whistles: 2
- clipboards: 6
- stopwatches: 6
- foam balls: 4
- task cards: 6
Teacher tip
Set up each station with a large task card and all the gear inside a hoop so it runs itself. The usual mistake is a station without a concrete task: each card should end in a product (a signal, a call, a play-by-play).
