Sport Translator: One Idea, Five Games
Walking in pairs, students visit five cones each labeled with a sport and explain how the tactical principle on their card shows up in each one. It cools them down and shows that invasion-game tactics transfer from one sport to another.
How to play
- Hand each pair a card with one principle: getting open, numerical advantage, transition, zone defense or pressuring the ball carrier (1 min).
- Walk to the first three cones (basketball, handball and soccer): at each one, do a gentle leg stretch while the pair tells each other an example of their principle in that sport (3 min).
- Last two cones (hockey and ultimate) with trunk and arm stretches and the same task (3 min).
- Share-out while walking in a circle: each pair shares the example that surprised them most (3 min).
Rules
- Always walk the route in the same direction.
- Stay at each cone until the pair has an example.
- Gentle stretches, no bouncing.
- If no example comes, you may invent a plausible play.
Variations
Easier
Card with an example already written for the first sport.
Standard
Five sports and one principle per pair.
Harder
At each cone, also name one difference: which rule of that sport changes how the principle is applied.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: shorten the route by placing cones closer together, or do it in a wheelchair with the same task.
- Students with visual impairments: walk arm in arm with their partner, who reads the card and each cone's sport.
- Students who don't play any sport: may use examples from recess games or sports video games.
Learning goals
- Recognize the same tactical principle in different sports.
- Explain a tactical idea in your own words.
- Cool down while walking.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 15
- cones: 5
Teacher tip
Write the sport on a folded sheet of paper on each cone. Typical mistake: pairs just name the sport without an example; ask for a concrete action: who, where and what they do.
