Split-Tempo Arm Coordination
A warm-up in place where each arm follows a different rhythm to the same song: one moves on every beat and the other every two beats while the legs march. It builds split coordination, focus and a gentle warm-up.
How to play
- Spread students out two arm lengths apart. Play a medium-tempo song and march in place for 1 minute counting the beats.
- Right arm: up and down on every beat. Left arm: up on one beat and down on the next, at half speed. Practice for 1 minute.
- Switch: now the left arm is fast and the right is slow. Then do arm circles, one forward over 4 counts and the other backward over 8.
- Add the legs: step-touch side to side while keeping the arm pattern, for 2 minutes.
- In pairs, one student does the pattern while the other checks that both rhythms hold; switch every 30 seconds.
- Finish with 1 minute of each student inventing a free pattern and showing it to a partner.
Rules
- Always start slow and speed up only when the pattern is working.
- Respect your space so you don't hit anyone with your arms.
- Safety: move the shoulders smoothly with no jerking, and stop if anything hurts.
- Mistakes are part of the game: laugh, reset and start again.
Variations
Easier
Work with the arms only, no leg movement.
Standard
Arms at two different rhythms plus step-touch, with partner checks.
Harder
Add three rhythms at once: one arm every beat, the other every two and a thigh pat every four.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility do it seated, combining arms with foot taps on the floor.
- For students with hearing loss, the partner marks the beat with light shoulder taps or a hand signal.
- Students who find it easy switch patterns every 8 counts without warning.
Learning goals
- Move each arm at a different rhythm at the same time.
- Stay focused while adding movements.
- Warm up shoulders and legs gently before the main activity.

Teacher tip
This is a great warm-up for small spaces or rainy days. Model it with your back to the class so students don't have to mirror-reverse the moves.
