Speed by Sight: The Teacher's Hand Sets the Pace
A warm-up without a single word: the height of the teacher's hand sets the movement speed and other gestures signal changes of direction or style. It gets the body going while keeping visual attention sharp.

How to play
- The class spreads out on the court facing the teacher. Explain the signals once: hand low walk, at waist jog, high easy run, closed fist stop (2 min).
- Move freely following only the hand, no voice or whistle (2 min).
- Add signals: arm out to one side, side shuffle; both hands up, gentle hops in place (2 min).
- Student volunteers take over as leader for 30 seconds each (2 min).
- Slow to a walk with hip and shoulder mobility, copying the last leader's gestures (1 min).
Rules
- No talking for the whole activity.
- You must be able to see the leader: nobody keeps their back turned for long.
- Running stays easy; it's not a race.
Variations
Easier
Three speeds and stop only.
Standard
Speeds, direction and hops with rotating leaders.
Harder
The leader moves around the court, so students have to find them with their eyes.
Adaptations
- Visually impaired students: run with a buddy guide who passes on the signals with agreed taps.
- Wheelchair users: speeds match their pushing pace and hops become arm raises.
- Students with asthma: may stick to walking and jogging and raise a hand if they need to stop.
Learning goals
- Warm up the cardiovascular system gradually.
- Keep visual attention without verbal cues.
- Lead the group with clear gestures.
Teacher tip
Very handy on noisy days or when the class arrives wound up: the silence spreads. Stand where the whole court can see you.
