Sort the Progression: Backward Roll Cards on the Move
Each group gets six shuffled cards with the backward roll progression steps (rocking, hands by the ears, wedge, hip spotting, flat mat, finish) and must sort them while walking between cones. It reviews the learning while the body calms down.
How to play
- Groups of five: six cards face down spread over six cones around the gym (2 min).
- Walking, the group flips the cards one at a time and brings them to their base, no running (3 min).
- At the base, they order the progression from easiest to hardest and act it out standing with gestures (3 min).
- Check with the teacher: each group explains why one step comes before another (2 min).
Rules
- Walking only; anyone who runs puts the card back on the cone.
- Each card is carried by a different group member.
- Everyone gives an opinion before the order is set.
- Cards go back face down at the end.
Variations
Easier
Four cards instead of six.
Standard
Six cards sorted and explained.
Harder
A trick card with an unsafe step (resting on the head) that must be discarded with a reason.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: sorts the cards at the base while the group brings them.
- Reading difficulties: cards with a picture and a single word.
- Low vision: large high-contrast cards and a partner describes them.
Learning goals
- Recall a gymnastics skill progression.
- Explain why skills are learned step by step.
- Cool down while working together.
Equipment for a class of 25
- skill cards: 36
- cones: 6
Teacher tip
Make letter-size picture cards and laminate them to reuse with other skills. Typical mistake: groups sorting in silence; ask each person to justify one card.
