Sock Wrestling on the Mats
A ground-wrestling game where everyone, on their knees, tries to pull off other players' socks while protecting their own. It is played in groups and then in pairs. Students build agility on the floor, choose between attacking and defending, and practice controlled contact.
How to play
- Set up five 3 x 3 yd mat areas and form groups of 5. Everyone takes off their sneakers and pulls a long sock over each of their own socks, only halfway onto the foot (3 min).
- Review the rules: always on knees or seated, no kicking, and the stop signal is two taps or 'stop.'
- On the whistle, play a 60-second round: each player tries to pull off other players' long socks by the toe and toss them off the mat. To defend, players hide their feet by turning or sitting on them.
- A player who loses both socks keeps playing to steal. At the end, each player scores a point per sock stolen and per sock kept.
- Play 4 rounds, mixing up the groups each time.
- Finish with 30-second partner duels, rotating up and down the mats.
Rules
- Pull the long sock by the toe only; no grabbing ankles or legs to drag.
- No kicking: protect your feet by hiding them, never by striking.
- No standing up or landing on top of anyone.
- If two players go for the same foot, the first to touch it keeps going.
Variations
Easier
Play only in pairs with a single long sock on one foot.
Standard
Groups of 5 on their knees, 60-second rounds, and a point per sock stolen or kept.
Harder
Play in teams of two: partners can help each other and put stolen socks back on a teammate.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play seated in a wheelchair or on the floor, holding the sock in a hand instead of wearing it.
- Discomfort with contact or autism: start with partner duels with a trusted classmate before playing in a group.
- Strength and size: group by size and allow no more than two players to attack the same student.
Learning goals
- Decide when to attack and when to protect in an everyone-against-everyone game.
- Move with agility on the knees and seated on the mats.
- Control contact while following safety rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long socks: 50
- mats: 20
Teacher tip
This is hugely motivating and helps students lose their fear of contact. Watch for kicking and bring spare socks.
