Sock Hammer Throw
With a tennis ball inside a long sock, students are introduced to the hammer throw: winds, release, and then a full turn. Students work on coordinating a rotational throw, rhythm, and safety in the throwing sector.
How to play
- Use cones to mark 5 separate throwing sectors fanning out about 40 degrees, each with a 2 m circle for the thrower. Groups of 5 with 2 hammers per group (3 minutes).
- Winds without letting go: holding the hammer with both hands, swing it around overhead with the low point in front of the right foot (for right-handers). Ten winds each (4 minutes).
- Standing throw: two winds and release into the sector over the left shoulder. Three throws each while the rest wait behind the line (5 minutes).
- Intro to the turn: two winds, one turn on the left heel, and release. First without the hammer, then with it (5 minutes).
- Mini contest: two throws with a turn each; the group measures everyone's best with the tape (4 minutes).
- One-minute wrap-up: at what moment did the hammer fly outside the sector?
Rules
- One thrower per sector; everyone else waits 5 m behind the circle.
- No one goes to retrieve until the teacher blows the whistle and all groups have thrown.
- If the hammer slips during the winds, let it drop down; never try to save it.
- Tie the sock with a tight knot and check it before every round.
Variations
Easier
Winds and a standing throw only, with no turn.
Standard
Two winds, one turn, and a release inside the sector.
Harder
Two full turns, with bonus points for landing in the middle half of the sector.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: throw from a seated position using side swings and a release without a turn.
- Autism or shyness: show the sequence with pictures and keep the same spot in the group order.
- Lower fitness or coordination: release from a standstill after a single wind.
Learning goals
- Perform winds and a controlled release of an implement with rotation.
- Learn the basic turn of the hammer throw.
- Strictly follow the safety rules of the throwing sector.

Teacher tip
Make the hammers before class and ask each student to bring an old sock. Always stand behind the throwers, never in the sector, and stop the activity if anyone doesn't wait their turn.
