Soccer: Switching Formations Mid-Game
Small-sided 6-on-6 games with goalkeepers where teams switch formations whenever the teacher holds up a card: 2-2-1, 3-1-1 or 1-2-2. Students work on spacing, the job of each line and adjusting together.
How to play
- Set up two 40 x 25 m (45 x 27 yd) fields and make four teams of 6 (keeper plus 5); the extra student is a rotating sub. Lay out the three formations with cones (4 min).
- Everyone starts in a 2-2-1 (two defenders, two midfielders, one forward) for a first 6-minute game.
- Then, every 3 minutes, the teacher holds up a card and teams have 10 seconds to reshape without stopping play (6 min).
- A goal within 30 seconds of a change counts double, to reward quick adjustment.
- 2-minute break: each team picks its best formation and uses it in a final 6-minute game against a team from the other field (8 min).
- Wrap-up: each team explains which line struggled most in each formation (4 min).
Rules
- Tackles stay on your feet, no contact from behind.
- Goalkeepers rotate every game.
- No shots during the 10-second reshape.
- Retrieve loose balls by walking around the next field.
Variations
Easier
Alternate between two formations only, changing on a dead ball.
Standard
Three formations switching every 3 minutes without stopping play.
Harder
The captain switches without warning and the other team must spot it and adjust.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play keeper in a smaller goal or center back in a limited zone.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: large color-coded cards show the formation without a whistle.
- Lower fitness: play forward in the 3-1-1 and rotate in and out as the sub.
Learning goals
- Understand each line's job in different formations.
- Reorganize quickly after a tactical change.
- Analyze each formation's strengths and weaknesses.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 4
- goals: 4
- pinnies: 12
- cones: 20
- cards: 3
Teacher tip
Use one card color per formation so it reads from far away. Teams tend to bunch up in the middle: remind them to keep the gaps between lines.
