Soccer: Live Stats and Halftime Adjustments
During a small-sided soccer game, two analysts per team log passes, turnovers and shots by zone on a tablet; at halftime the team reads the data and picks one adjustment. Students practice using digital tools and data-based decision-making.
How to play
- Make four teams of 6 on two fields split into three zones with cones; the extra student manages the tablets. Two members of each team are analysts (4 min).
- Explain the template (a simple spreadsheet or form): one analyst logs completed passes and turnovers; the other logs shots and their zone.
- First half: 3-on-3 plus goalkeepers for 8 minutes while analysts record from the sideline.
- 4-minute halftime: analysts share the data and the team agrees on a single adjustment, such as attacking through the zone with fewer turnovers.
- 8-minute second half: the analysts play and two teammates take the tablets to check whether the adjustment worked.
- Wrap-up: each team compares both halves and explains whether it improved (4 min).
Rules
- Analysts stay 2 m (6 ft) off the sideline and never bring a tablet onto the field.
- Tackles stay on your feet, no contact from behind.
- Only game data is recorded, never comments on people.
- Tablets go back in their case at the end of each half.
Variations
Easier
Log one stat on paper: completed passes.
Standard
Two analysts per team, three stats and one halftime adjustment.
Harder
Analysts make a quick chart and the team justifies its adjustment with it.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: serve as lead analyst all game and present the data.
- Visual impairment: use enlarged text on the tablet or dictate stats to a partner.
- Lower fitness: alternate playing and analyzing, and play in the defensive zone.
Learning goals
- Use a digital tool to record game data.
- Interpret simple data to make tactical decisions.
- Test whether a tactical adjustment works.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 4
- goals: 4
- pinnies: 12
- cones: 16
- tablets: 4
Teacher tip
Build the template with big tap boxes: if analysts have to type, they miss plays. Check batteries and make sure no photos or video of students are taken.
