Soccer Juggling Ladder
An individual juggling progression in steps, from kick-and-catch to several touches in a row without the ball hitting the ground. Each student sets a goal and moves up the ladder, improving control with the foot and thigh and eye-foot coordination.
How to play
- Give each student a ball and a card showing 6 steps: drop, kick with the laces, and catch; two touches with a bounce between; one touch with no bounce; thigh then foot; three touches in a row; five touches alternating feet.
- Students spread out at least 3 yards apart and start on step 1.
- To move up, a student must complete the step 3 times in a row and show a partner, who signs off on it.
- Work in 3 rounds of 3 minutes; at the end of each, students mark their step and set a goal for the next round.
- Between rounds, take 1 minute to demonstrate the key technique: locked ankle, toes pointed, soft touch straight up.
- Finish with 2 minutes in pairs: how many touches can the two of you get passing the ball back and forth, bounces allowed?
Rules
- Everyone stays in their own space; collect loose balls by walking around the outside.
- No headers: feet and thighs only.
- A partner signs off on each step; no one checks off their own.
- Soft touches: no booting the ball high into the air.
Variations
Easier
Use a balloon or a foam ball and allow catching between touches.
Standard
Use a 6-step ladder with a soccer ball and partner sign-off.
Harder
Add steps for the weaker foot and for 10 touches in a row with no bounce.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student works the ladder from the wheelchair, tapping a balloon or light ball with the hand or forearm.
- Autism or shyness: the picture card for each step lets the student progress at their own pace without depending on the group.
- Skill level: advanced students invent a step 7 and teach it to the class.
Learning goals
- Set a realistic goal and track their own progress.
- Keep the ball up with control using the foot and thigh.
- Coordinate eyes, feet, and balance over repeated touches.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 25
- cards: 25
Teacher tip
Letting a little air out of the balls helps a lot on the early steps. Praise personal improvement and avoid comparisons: it is normal for a class to be spread across several steps.
