Soccer Diamond Passing with Checking Runs
A soccer-specific warm-up for groups of 5 on a cone diamond: each player checks toward the ball before receiving, takes an open first touch, and passes to the next corner, following the pass. It activates passing, receiving, and timing of support runs in a continuous pattern.
How to play
- Set up 5 diamonds with cones (corners 10–12 m apart) and place a group of 5 on each: 2 at the starting corner and 1 at each other corner, with one ball.
- Basic pattern (3 min): A passes to B, who checks away 2 m and back to the ball, receives with the far foot, and passes to C. Everyone follows their pass.
- Wall pass (3 min): B one-touches the ball back to A, who followed the pass, and A plays it into space toward C; same rotation.
- Switch direction (2 min): on the whistle, the ball travels the other way to work the other foot.
- Two balls (2 min): add a second ball from the opposite corner; players must call out before every pass.
- Final challenge (2 min): the group counts clean passes in 60 seconds, then tries again to beat its score.
Rules
- Pass along the ground and firmly, with the inside of the foot.
- Never receive standing still: always check away and back before asking for the ball.
- If the ball leaves the diamond, the player who lost it gets it without cutting through another diamond.
- Keep at least 5 m between diamonds to avoid getting hit by other groups' balls.
Variations
Easier
Shrink the diamond to 8 m and allow two touches to control before passing.
Standard
Use a 10–12 m diamond with an open first touch and two-touch passing.
Harder
Play the wall pass one-touch and add a passive defender in the middle who forces players to choose their receiving foot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: hold a fixed corner and pass by hand or kick from a seated position; teammates adjust pass speed.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with bells and call the receiver's name before each pass.
- Less experienced players: allow stopping the ball with the sole before passing and shorten the distance to 8 m.
Learning goals
- Activate passing and open first touches at game speed.
- Time the checking run with the moment of the pass.
- Communicate with voice and gestures to keep the ball moving.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 10
- cones: 20
Teacher tip
The most common error is receiving facing the passer and turning afterward; ask for a first touch already facing the next corner.
