Slow-Motion Uchikomi: Shadow Technique to Cool Down
A cool-down where students repeat the session's wrestling moves in shadow, in very slow motion. Heart rate comes down while they review technique with a partner's help.
How to play
- Each student, alone, repeats the session's stance footwork at half speed (2 min).
- Repeat the main move of the day (off-balance, push, or a breakfall without reaching the floor) in super slow motion, ten seconds per move (2 min).
- In pairs: one does their slow move and the other names one thing done well and one to improve; switch (2 min).
- Everyone together: the slowest move possible, ending frozen in the final position like a statue (2 min).
Rules
- No one touches anyone; it's all shadow.
- Breakfalls only go as far as the start, never to the floor.
- Feedback is always about the move, never the body.
Variations
Easier
Stance footwork in slow motion only.
Standard
Main move in shadow with partner feedback.
Harder
Chain three moves from the unit in slow motion without losing balance.
Adaptations
- Blind or low-vision students: the partner quietly describes the move before they do it.
- Wheelchair users: do the move with the trunk and arms from the chair.
- Injured students: observe and give the feedback.
Learning goals
- Bring intensity down gradually.
- Review technique with attention to detail.
- Give a partner useful feedback.
Teacher tip
The slower, the harder: anyone rushing gives themselves away. If it's noisy, count the ten seconds quietly yourself.
