Slow-Motion Parachute: The Ball That Goes Around
The whole group holds the parachute and, using very slow arm movements, rolls a ball around the edge without letting it drop to the middle or fly out. The slow pace and the need to coordinate in silence make for a cooperative cool-down.
How to play
- The group sits on the floor holding the edge of the spread-out parachute; place a foam ball near the edge (1 min).
- Without talking, the group raises and lowers the edge section by section so the ball rolls in a circle; count how many full laps it makes (2 min).
- Analysis break: which section lifted too early and how could they anticipate the ball arriving (1 min).
- Add a second ball rolling the other way; the goal is one full lap for both (2 min).
- Finish: lower the parachute to the floor very slowly, then everyone lies down with heads toward the center and rests in silence for a minute (2 min).
Rules
- Stay seated the whole time.
- No yanking; movements are slow and wide.
- Play in silence; only eye contact may be used to cue the person next to you.
Variations
Easier
Play standing with a large ball that rolls more slowly.
Standard
Seated, with one ball and then two going opposite ways.
Harder
Try to keep a large ball and a small ball rolling the same way at once without touching.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: hold the edge from the chair while students in that section stand to match the height.
- Visual impairment: the neighbor gives a tap on the arm when the ball is coming.
- Back problems: sit on a low bench or a folded mat to be more comfortable.
Learning goals
- Lower arousal with slow, controlled movements.
- Anticipate the path of a moving object in a cooperative task.
- Coordinate as a group without words.
Equipment for a class of 25
- parachute: 1
- foam balls: 2
Teacher tip
If the lesson started with the parachute as a warm-up, this closer rounds off the class with the same equipment. The minute lying under the parachute is often the calmest moment of the lesson.
