Slow-Motion Group Stretch Routine
Groups of five create a sequence of six linked stretches with smooth transitions, set to slow music, and perform it for another group. It blends the cool-down with dance and movement: timing, flow, and use of levels.
How to play
- Students form groups of five and the teacher plays slow instrumental music; each stretch lasts eight slow counts and students flow into the next without stopping (1 min).
- Each group picks six stretches, including at least one standing, one seated, and one lying down, and decides the order (2 min).
- Groups rehearse the transitions: how to move smoothly from one stretch to the next, such as spiraling down or rolling, all together (2 min).
- They run the full sequence twice with the music, aiming for perfect timing as a group (2 min).
- Groups pair up: one performs while the other watches for timing and flow; then they switch (2 min).
- Each watching group gives the performing group one strength and one thing to improve (1 min).
Rules
- Hold every stretch without bouncing and breathe calmly.
- Transitions are slow; no jumps or fast spins.
- Safety: leave a yard between students so no one gets bumped during level changes.
Variations
Easier
Four stretches, all standing or seated, with the teacher calling the changes out loud.
Standard
Six stretches on three levels with transitions to the music.
Harder
Add different formations, such as canon or mirror, for at least two stretches.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the group builds in seated versions that a wheelchair user can do in unison or as a mirror.
- Shyness: the group may perform facing the wall or with eyes closed, with no audience in front.
- Fitness level: more experienced groups add a partner stretch to the sequence.
Learning goals
- Create a stretching routine with smooth transitions.
- Move in sync with the group and the music.
- Give constructive feedback on another group's work.

Teacher tip
Choose music around 60 beats per minute so the tempo invites calm. If a group gets stuck, suggest starting with a standing-to-lying sequence and adding transitions afterward.
