Slow High Step: A Stretch Challenge on the Wall Bars
An active hip and groin stretch run as a challenge: hands on the wall bars and one foot on the floor, slowly raise the other foot to the highest rung you can and hold. It winds down after hard work and ties flexibility to a real climbing move.

How to play
- Facing the wall bars, hands at chest height; mark with tape the rung you can reach comfortably with your foot (1 min).
- Slow high step: raise the foot to the marked rung over 3 s, bring the hips to the wall and hold 20 s breathing normally; twice on the right leg (2 min).
- Same work on the left leg, comparing which side reaches higher (2 min).
- Final challenge: try one rung higher without letting your hips drift from the wall; note your result (1 min).
Rules
- No swinging or bouncing: the foot rises slowly.
- Standing leg stays on the floor.
- Stretch yes, pain no.
- If you lose balance, lower the foot; don't yank with your arms.
Variations
Easier
Foot on a low rung and hands higher for support.
Standard
Marked rung and a 20-second hold.
Harder
No hands for the last 5 s of the hold.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: hip stretch seated on a bench with the foot on another bench.
- Knee injury: stretch the healthy side only and do groin stretches on the floor.
- Students with visual impairments: a partner guides the foot by hand instead of tape.
Learning goals
- Cool down with an active stretch.
- Improve hip mobility for high steps.
- Track your own progress across sessions.
Equipment for a class of 25
- wall bars: 10
- colored tape: 1
Teacher tip
Use the same mark in later sessions so students can see their progress. The usual mistake is pulling the hips away to get the foot higher: hips close to the wall is what counts.
