Slow Bike Race and Track Stand Challenge
The classic slow race, where the winner is the last rider to cross the finish line without putting a foot down, followed by track stand challenges. It builds low-speed bike control, which is key for riding safely at city lights and intersections.
How to play
- Chalk 6 lanes 1 m (3 ft) wide and 15 m (50 ft) long; check brakes and helmets on every bike (3 minutes).
- Explain the slow race: 6 riders start together and the winner is the last to finish without a foot touching the ground or leaving their lane.
- Run 4 heats of the slow race; anyone who puts a foot down goes back to the start and waits for the next heat (6 minutes total).
- Teach the track stand: cranks level, front foot forward, front wheel slightly turned and light brake pressure.
- In pairs, one tries to stay stopped as long as possible while the partner counts seconds; 3 tries each (6 minutes).
- Close with a slow race final for the top 6 and a quick talk about what technique worked (5 minutes).
Rules
- Touching a foot down or leaving the lane sends the rider back to the start.
- No rolling backward or touching another rider.
- Helmets stay buckled at all times.
- Students not riding wait outside the lanes, behind the cone line.
Variations
Easier
Use 1.5 m lanes and allow one foot touch per race.
Standard
Lanes 1 m wide and 15 m long, no foot touches.
Harder
Lanes 60 cm (2 ft) wide with a zigzag halfway down.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: use a trike or adaptive bike and score speed control instead of the track stand.
- Hearing impairment: start each heat with a visual flag signal.
- Little bike experience: lower the seat so feet can reach the ground easily.
Learning goals
- Control the bike at very low speed without losing balance.
- Coordinate brake, pedal and steering in a track stand.
- Connect this skill to safety in city riding.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
The secret is a light rear brake and eyes up, not on the wheel. It's very motivating for less experienced riders because the fastest one doesn't win.
