SL3 Para-Badminton: Singles on a Half-Width Court
Singles badminton games on the narrow court used by the SL3 class of para-badminton (standing players with significant lower-limb impairment). The half-width court completely changes tactics: fewer angles, more depth.
How to play
- Intro and setup: in para-badminton, SL3 singles is played on a half-width court; tape the center line of each half (4 min).
- Depth rally: alternating clears and drops on the half court, counting how many shots stay in (6 min).
- Games to 11 on the half court, new opponent each round; log points won by depth vs. by drop shots (14 min).
- Compare with full-court singles: which shots are wasted and which are worth more on the narrow court (6 min).
Rules
- A shuttle landing outside the half court is the opponent's point.
- Diagonal serve as in the rules, into the matching half court.
- Safety gap between courts; players waiting stay off the court.
- Respect the opponent's call on close shuttles.
Variations
Easier
Cooperative rallies counting hits on the half court.
Standard
Games to 11 on the half court.
Harder
Only winners landing in the last meter or near the net score.
Adaptations
- Student with limited mobility in one leg: plays real SL3 or covers only the front half with double points for the opponent.
- Wheelchair user: plays on the half court without the net zone, as in the wheelchair classes.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing student: the referee shows the score with fingers.
Learning goals
- Adapt tactics to a narrow court.
- Know para-badminton classes as competitive events.
- Win points by playing for depth.
Equipment for a class of 25
- badminton rackets: 30
- shuttlecocks: 20
- badminton nets: 4
- masking tape: 3
Teacher tip
In a narrow gym, half courts let you run more games at once. The usual mistake is still hunting for angles: show the points sheet after round one.
