Six-Point Shadow: Badminton Footwork Without a Shuttle
A footwork warm-up that moves students to the six zones of a badminton court without a shuttle. It works on the ready position, the crossover step and the final lunge.

How to play
- Pairs, each with a square about 4 x 4 m: six numbered cones (two front, two sides, two back) and a center base cone (1 min).
- Ready position: feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, racket up. A small split step as the partner starts to move (1 min).
- One calls numbers and the other moves to that cone, shadows a stroke and returns to base. Switch every 45 seconds (4 min).
- The leader points instead of calling, so the mover has to watch (2 min).
- Light movement and dynamic hip and calf stretches (2 min).
Rules
- Always return to base before the next number.
- The final forward lunge is on the racket-side foot, with the knee not past the toes.
- Face the imaginary net; never run backward blindly.
Variations
Easier
Only four cones (two front, two back) at a slow pace.
Standard
Six cones with called numbers.
Harder
Six cones pointed to silently, with two moves in a row to opposite zones.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the leader only points, never calls.
- Limited mobility or wheelchair users: smaller square and four cones within reach.
- Recovering ankle: walk the patterns with no jumps.
Learning goals
- Learn the ready position and the return to center.
- Raise heart rate with sport-specific movement.
- React to visual and verbal cues.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 98
- badminton rackets: 28
Teacher tip
Leave the cones set up for the main part of the lesson. Keep insisting on the return to base; without that habit, students freeze where they hit during games.
