Simulated Night-O: Dimmed Gym and Reflective Controls
A simulated night orienteering session in the gym with blinds down and lights low, using flashlights and controls marked with reflective tape, always walking and in pairs. It shows how navigation changes at night and which safety measures are non-negotiable.
How to play
- Safety briefing: emergency lights stay on, floor cleared, walking only, fixed pairs, and a stop signal that brings all the lights up (5 min).
- Adjustment: one minute in low light without a flashlight, then technique: beam low toward the floor, map lit from the side to avoid glare (3 min).
- Round 1: in pairs, one navigates and one holds the light; 6 reflective controls, punching the card (10 min).
- Round 2: switch roles and run a new course with controls tucked behind gym equipment (8 min).
- Lights-on debrief: which reference points disappeared, which worked, and what you'd need to do this for real in a park (4 min).
Rules
- Never total darkness: emergency lights stay on.
- No running; walking only.
- Never shine a flashlight in anyone's face.
- When the whistle blows, everyone freezes and the lights come on.
Variations
Easier
Slightly brighter light and controls on the walls.
Standard
Low light, one flashlight per pair, and reflective controls spread across the floor.
Harder
Flashlight for the navigator only and a map without wall references, just the gym equipment.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: takes part with more light in their area, or acts as safety officer in charge of the whistle and lights.
- Hearing impairment: the stop signal is all lights on, in addition to the whistle.
- Anxiety in the dark: starts in the brightest area with a trusted partner, or switches to observer.
Learning goals
- Experience how perception and navigation change in low light.
- Apply safety rules specific to night orienteering.
- Cooperate in pairs with navigating and lighting roles.
Equipment for a class of 25
- flashlights: 15
- reflective tape: 1
- control markers: 12
- gym maps: 30
- crayons: 12
- control cards: 15
Teacher tip
Phone flashlights work if you lack flashlights, but the phone must be held firmly in the hand, never pocketed. Clear anything off the floor that someone could trip on. The typical mistake is aiming the beam at the horizon: teach them to light the ground two or three steps ahead.
