Silent Floor Shapes
In groups of five and without talking, students lie on the floor to form shapes, letters or numbers called out by the teacher, then hold still for a few seconds while breathing slowly. It builds teamwork, nonverbal communication and relaxation on the floor.
How to play
- Make groups of five, each with two or three mats pushed together as a base (1 min).
- Explain the task: the teacher names a shape and the group forms it lying on the floor without talking, using only gestures and eye contact.
- Start simple: a square, a star, the letter T. Once formed, they hold it for 20 seconds with eyes closed (2 min).
- Raise the challenge: a two-digit number with two groups together, an arrow, or the school's first initial (2 min).
- Take a photo, or have one group look at another's shape and guess it before you announce it (1.5 min).
- Final free shape: each group invents one that shows how they feel and holds it for a minute, breathing slowly (1.5 min).
Rules
- Silence while forming the shape.
- Position bodies carefully, never stepping on or leaning on anyone.
- Touch classmates only on hands, arms or feet.
- Once the shape is formed, everyone stays still until the signal.
Variations
Easier
Talking is allowed and shapes are simple geometric figures.
Standard
Letters, numbers and shapes in silence, with 20 seconds of stillness.
Harder
The group spells a short word letter by letter without talking, and other groups read it.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student directs the shape with gestures from a wheelchair or joins it seated on the mat.
- Students with visual impairments: a classmate guides them by the hand to their spot and describes the shape.
- Students with autism or who avoid touch: they take an end position with no body contact.
Learning goals
- Cooperate to solve a task without spoken language.
- Become aware of their body's position in space.
- Relax by holding still while lying down.

Teacher tip
Save the free shape for the very end as a calm closing moment. Make sure nobody rests their head on someone else and that groups have enough room.
