Silent Cup Stack Tower
In groups of four and in total silence, students build the tallest, most stable cup tower they can, communicating only with gestures. It develops teamwork, patience and fine motor control while bringing energy levels down.
How to play
- Make groups of four seated in a circle on the floor and give each group 12 cups (1 min).
- Explain the key rule: from the signal on, no talking; only gestures, eye contact and turns (0.5 min).
- Round 1: each student places one cup per turn, going clockwise, to build a pyramid; they have 2 minutes (2 min).
- Round 2: take the tower down and rebuild it with everyone keeping one hand behind their back (2 min).
- When a round is done, the group silently raises hands; the teacher checks the tower and rates it on stability, not speed.
- Group reflection: how did you organize without words, and who took the lead? (2.5 min).
Rules
- Total silence while building; if someone talks, the group removes one cup from the tower.
- Only one cup per turn, in order.
- If the tower falls, pick it up without blaming anyone and start again.
- Cups are only for building; no throwing or stepping on them.
Variations
Easier
Allow one spoken word per round and use only 6 cups.
Standard
Build a 12-cup tower in silence with set turns.
Harder
Each group copies a drawn model that only one student can see, who explains it using gestures.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the group builds around a table at the student's height.
- Students with autism: show a picture of the turn order beforehand and give them a set spot in the circle.
- Students with fine motor difficulties: allow both hands in the second round.
Learning goals
- Cooperate with a group using nonverbal communication.
- Control impulses and respect turn-taking.
- Reflect on the roles that emerge in teamwork.

Teacher tip
Count cups when you hand them out and collect them to save time. A silent leader usually emerges; use that in the debrief to talk about leadership and listening.
