Side-Bend Reach Test: Left vs. Right
A simple side-bend flexibility test: with the back against the wall, a student slides a hand down the thigh while a partner marks the reach with a sticky note. Both sides are compared to spot imbalances, and the activity ends with side stretches.
How to play
- Students form pairs with two sticky notes, a measuring tape, and a form; each pair finds a clear section of wall (1 min).
- A stands with the back against the wall, heels a hand's width from it, arms at the sides; B sticks a note on A's thigh at the tip of the middle finger (1 min).
- A leans to the right, sliding the hand down the leg without peeling the back off the wall or lifting the heels; B sticks a second note where the finger reaches and measures the distance between notes (1 min).
- Repeat to the left and B writes both distances on A's form (1 min).
- Partners switch roles and A measures B the same way (2 min).
- Each student finds the difference between sides: if it is more than 1 inch, they do two 20-second side stretches toward the tighter side and one toward the other; if less, one per side (2 min).
Rules
- Back and glutes stay against the wall during the side bend.
- Both heels stay on the floor.
- Safety: if the back hurts while bending, stop and tell the teacher.
Variations
Easier
Compare both sides by eye only, without the tape.
Standard
Measure both sides with the tape and adjust the stretches to the result.
Harder
Repeat the measurement at the end to see whether the difference between sides got smaller.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do it seated on a chair with the back supported, sliding the hand down toward the floor along the side.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher demonstrates each step and a poster on the wall shows the sequence.
- Fitness level: students who reach very low focus on the left-right difference rather than the distance.
Learning goals
- Measure side-bend trunk flexibility with a simple procedure.
- Identify possible imbalances between sides.
- Apply stretches based on what the test shows.
Equipment for a class of 25
- sticky notes: 50
- measuring tapes: 13
- self-assessment forms: 25
Teacher tip
The usual mistake is twisting or peeling off the wall to reach farther; stress that the hand slides down the side of the thigh.

Agonist-Antagonist Stretch Match
In pairs, one student performs and names a stretch and the partner must answer with a stretch for the opposing muscle; then both hold both stretches.
