Shoulder Mobility with a Dowel

A slow series of shoulder, chest, and upper-back movements holding a PVC dowel with both hands, ideal after throwing, racket, or strength days. It builds mobility and helps prevent upper-body overuse.

How to play

  1. Each student takes a dowel and stands about 6 feet from others, holding it with a wide grip in front of the thighs (1 min).
  2. Front raise: lift the dowel overhead on the inhale and lower it on the exhale, eight slow reps (1 min).
  3. Side bend: with the dowel overhead, lean to each side and hold 15 seconds (1 min).
  4. Trunk rotation: dowel across the upper back, resting on the shoulders, with slow twists to each side, six per side (1 min).
  5. Pass-through: with a very wide grip, bring the dowel from the front over the head to behind the hips and back, five times, only if pain-free (1.5 min).
  6. Final chest stretch: dowel standing upright on the floor, hand high, turning the body away, 20 seconds per side; then put dowels away (1.5 min).

Variations

Easier

Teacher tip

The common mistake is arching the lower back on the overhead lift; cue a braced core and ribs down. Hand out and collect dowels by rows to avoid accidents.
