Shin, Ankle, and Toe Stretches
A routine for the often-forgotten lower leg: the shin muscle, ankle, toes, and sole of the foot. It is very useful after running, jumping, or barefoot work and helps prevent shin splints and plantar fascia pain.
How to play
- Sitting on the yoga mat with legs straight: 10 ankle circles in each direction with each foot.
- Shins: kneel and sit back on the heels with the tops of the feet flat on the mat, 30 seconds. For more stretch, place the hands behind and lift the knees slightly.
- Toes and soles: kneel with the toes tucked under on the floor and slowly sit back on the heels, 2 times for 20 seconds.
- Standing by the wall: place the top of the toes of one foot on the floor behind you and gently push the ankle forward, 25 seconds per leg.
- Seated: slowly write your name in the air with each foot.
- To finish, 30 seconds of thumb massage on the sole of each foot.
Rules
- The toe stretch is intense: 20 seconds max, and come out if it hurts.
- Keep a hand on the wall for the standing stretch.
- No bouncing; breathe calmly.
- Socks are fine; shoes are lined up off the mats.
Variations
Easier
Replace the toe stretch with a rolled towel under the ankles when sitting on the heels.
Standard
Do the full routine with 20–30 seconds per position.
Harder
In the heel-sitting position, lift the knees off the floor for a few seconds with control.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: in a wheelchair, do the circles, the name writing, and point the foot down with help from the hand.
- Visual impairment: the teacher guides the student's hands once to the foot and ankle landmarks.
- Sensitive knees: place a folded mat under the knees or do everything seated.
Learning goals
- Safely stretch the shin muscle, toes, and sole of the foot.
- Improve ankle mobility after running and jumping.
- Learn tools to prevent shin and foot pain.

Teacher tip
Many students don't know you can stretch the shin and really appreciate it after a distance run. If possible, do it barefoot on the mats so they can feel the foot better.
