Shared Towel Partner Stretches
In pairs holding a single towel between them, students use each other's weight as a counterbalance to stretch the back, hamstrings, sides, and chest. They must communicate to control the tension so neither partner loses balance.
How to play
- Students form pairs of similar height with one towel; they stand face to face, one step apart, each holding one end with both hands (0.5 min).
- Back counterbalance: both lean back at the same time with knees slightly bent, towel taut, hips back, feeling the back stretch; 20 seconds, twice (1.5 min).
- Hamstrings: still holding the towel, they straighten the legs and lower a flat torso into a table shape, head between the arms, 20 seconds (1 min).
- Sides: partners stand side by side, hold the towel overhead with their outside hands, and lean away from each other together, 15 seconds; switch sides (1.5 min).
- Chest: A sits on the floor holding the towel behind the back; B stands behind and gently lifts the towel until A says "there" and holds 20 seconds; switch roles (2 min).
- To finish, face to face, partners take three breaths together, raising and lowering the towel between them (1.5 min).
Rules
- Both partners start and finish each counterbalance together, calling it out loud.
- The person being stretched sets the tension and the partner stops as soon as they say "there."
- Safety: during counterbalances, keep feet planted and knees slightly bent.
Variations
Easier
Do only the back and side counterbalances with a small lean.
Standard
Four partner stretches held 15 to 20 seconds.
Harder
Link the stretches without letting go of the towel and count breaths instead of seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a wheelchair user does the back and side counterbalances from the locked chair while the partner adjusts the height.
- Shyness or autism: let students choose partners; the towel avoids direct hand contact.
- Fitness level: if there is a big weight difference, the heavier partner leans less to even out the force.
Learning goals
- Stretch the back, hamstrings, sides, and chest with a partner's help.
- Communicate how the stretch feels to adjust the tension.
- Work together to keep shared balance during counterbalances.
